As the booster card subjects are decided by popular vote, I have no real insight on the crowd reasoning behind each pairing, but this was extremely fun to illustrate nevertheless! One of my favorites so far, partly because I adore the dramatic lighting.

So, It can be stressful not knowing exactly what the artist wants from you as a commissioner, especially first timers, so I’ve whipped up a lil something!
(gotta say, this is what I want as an commissions artist, can’t speak for anyone else!)
REFERENCE GUIDE 💖
- So first thing, I personally prefer having a PDF/word/page doc or a google doc for references, rather than loose images on an email. It’s much easier for me to find the information I need and not have to go from tab to tab!
If that’s something you can’t do, let me know when you email me and we can work something out!

- In that Document, written description and visual references are key, both are preferable! I’m happy to charge a little extra to work from written description only but Visuals (sketches, previous commissions, photos) give me something to base off, so I don’t spend the whole time researching for your piece! Colours, patterns, face claims are all helpful!
the following info is generally what I need (you’re welcome to copy paste this into your doc!) :
VISUALS
Age/Race/height/body type:
skin colour/ scars/ freckles/ skin conditions etc:
eye colour/shape:
hair colour/style/decorations:
Any additional details (prosthetics limbs/no limbs!/tattoos/piercings/wings):

If there is more than one character on your ref sheet, please separate your descriptions/images out by character for ease.
I’d also want to know the character’s relationship to each other; family, friends? enemies to lovers? are they physically affectionate to each other? How would they interact in this scene?

if your commission has a background/scene, visual and written references are brilliant along with the vibe you want for the scene and time of day!

Keep in mind, the sketch is only a guide, if you have more than one page of visual refs, that’s cool! As long as you can get the info above (and anything you think i’ll need) into a single pdf/google doc format, you are good!

Death/The Masque of the Red Death - Alternative card for the Literary Tarot

Justice/The Count of Monte Cristo for the Literary Tarot
Alix Harrow paired Dumas’s story of adventure and vengeance with the Justice card, which has the pretty straightforward meaning of truth and fairness when upright, and injustice and corruption when reversed. Edmond Dantès’ unjust imprisonment and subsequent quest to right the wrongs done to him is a fantasy of justice carried out: scales balanced, truth revealed, and no bad deed unpunished.
This card isn’t quite as close to the classic illustration - a figure seated with scales in one hand and sword in the other - as some others have been, but I had it in mind while designing the card nevertheless. Dantès in a way still holds an instrument of justice in each hand: imprisoned and thinking on those who have wronged him, he holds the scale, while his older, richer, mirrored self has not a sword but a dueling pistol, one of the means he uses to enact revenge - or purposefully does not use, pulling himself back from the edge of the abyss of cruelty for vengeance’s sake.

Tini Howard paired the short story The Cold Equations with Temperance, a card of moderation, balance, and serenity. In the story, a pilot charged with delivering life-saving medicine to a far-off planet discovers a stowaway, and due to the added weight and use of fuel, must decide between saving the stowaway, Marilyn, and saving the medicine. This story/card pair was chosen not just for the most literal core of balancing the equations, but for Barton’s calmness and awkward kindness in the face of this choice, and Marilyn’s grace as she comes to terms with it.
For this card I very much wanted to focus on the two people involved: Marilyn in the moments after understanding the two terrible outcomes, wrestling herself back under control, and the pilot Barton, resigned from the first page to what’s going to happen, wishing like hell that wasn’t the case, trying to give Marilyn both the space and privacy to compose herself and at the same time offer what scant reassurance another presence can offer. In the foreground is the dashboard, lit red with the urgency of the problem; in the background are the stars. The equations present are (unless I have fucked something up! which is possible!) the rocket equation, and an exponential return, referencing the whole issue with fuel and weight that forces this dilemma in the first place.
